Psychological Services : Psychotherapy
psych_therapy.jpgPsychotherapy is a valuable tool for assisting an individual in building healthy, adaptive coping skills to manage life difficulties.

At PBSC, we offer outpatient individual psychotherapy which is primarily cognitive-behavioral in nature. This means that we help patients understand how their thoughts and beliefs are influencing their mood and possibly contributing to the experience of pain and stress. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a relatively brief type of psychotherapy and is empirically-supported treatment for anxiety disorders, depression, chronic pain, and insomnia. In addition to treating these disorders, we also provide psychotherapy for: adjustment difficulties related to various life events such as a new medical diagnosis and/or treatments, chronic illness, physical or cognitive limitations, and coping with loss (e.g. loss of job or ability); and health promotion/lifestyle modification (e.g. when stress is suspected as creating or maintaining poor physical health).

CBT is highly compatible with biofeedback. When used together, we are able to teach patients improved ways of managing not only their thinking patterns and moods, but also their physiological functioning.

Individual psychotherapy is provided at PBSC for adults (18 and older). Please note that we do not provide crisis intervention for patients new to our practice. If you believe you are in a life-threatening situation, please go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. For outpatient mental health services in your area, please see our mental health links on the Resources page.
